We are looking for healthy men and women to participate in a study investigating the functional correlation between brain waves and body sway during an experimentally induced state of temporary non-spinning vertigo (i.e., mixed rocking, bobbing, swaying sensation lasting max. 45 minutes). This is a comparative study to results from patients diagnosed with Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS, a.k.a. ‘sickness of disembarkment’). MdDS describes an unusual neurological disorder, in which patients experience a constant sensation of rhythmic self-motion lasting from days to even years. This classically occurs after disembarking from a ship (or other modes of passive motion e.g. plane or train travel). Please help us to better understand the underlying physiological changes responsible for this often misdiagnosed syndrome.
Reimbursement: 45 Euro
Inclusion criteria:
• Aged between 18 and 60 years old
• normal or corrected-to-normal vision
• No existing/history of vestibular, cardiovascular, orthopaedic, or psychiatric conditions
• Is not pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication
Measurements planned:
• Surface electrophysiological recordings from one leg and the head
• Body sway (small accelerometer taped to lower back)
• Dizziness perception (self-rating from 0 to 3)
Duration: 2,5 hours, of which 30 minutes involves standing eyes open on a slowly swaying platform.
Testing location: Schwindelambulanz (Block HI), Klinikum Großhadern
Contact person: Dr. rer. nat. Tina Tsai --> tina.tsai@med.uni-muenchen.de
If you are interested, please write to the Email address provided, or simply scan the QR-code. All collected data will of course be analysed pseudonymised and stored safely. Further details regarding the study will be explained during an initial consultation. Thank you!
